Excessive oil use was created by StofOtter
:( I have a 2011 KLR with about 10000 km. It was serviced last month and I did about 400 - 500km and the oil shows empty. I use 10w40 oil. When i bought it in Sept i did a 2000km trip and used about 2lt oil. It didn't bother me because I was driving above 5000rpm for long stretches and thought that it was the culprit.

What will be the cheapest/best option or what will you recommend ,:

Bore it 1 size over or to do the 685 upgrade. Where in SA can you buy the 685 kits?

Thanks

For a 2011 that is serious unless it has been messed around with before. The early new shapes (2008) were oil burners, but later ones not so bad if you keep revs below 5000rpm

Take bike to Cape KLR AKA Jorg. You will find his contact details in the MTCE section. He is in Durbanville. I would recommend if the engine is still original to go 0.5mm oversize. If you go big bore, like I did you have no options if you have issues in the future. Plus original Kawa is cheaper with todays rand.
I am on my second Big bore after my 680cc Woesner did not go well and after 10 000km started to use oils so badly is was smoking.
I had to import the Schnitz big bore at a very expensive price so I could go another 0.25mm bigger and still use my existing barrel/sleeve.

Good luck

I also have a 2011 model. Does not like 10W40. Synthetic? Nope.
Mine chewed through 500ml every 1000km's until I switched to Caltex Delo400 15w40 Diesel oil.
Oil consumption has dropped off drastically, but she will use if I push her to 130km/h.

Read here about all the oil discussions:
www.klrclan.co.za/forum/maintenance/5434...l-oil-related-topics

Go to capeklr and get fresh oil. With my limited experience I found that my 2010 burns more oil when approaching the next service. And keep the oil at the top level, don't let it go down to the lower level.

20W50 may be too thick on a cold start-up, take capeklr's advice on that. He knows a thing or two about engines.

My bike is happy with HX7 which is a 10W40 I think.
