Oom Lou's comment about the KLR introducing him to adventure riding got me thinking:
  • On what bike did you learn to ride?
  • When did you buy your first KLR?
  • How many KLRs have you owned since?

  • On what bike did you learn to ride?
33 years ago, on my boet’s Honda MB5 – in fact, Gareth Davidson, from Superbike Magazine, recently restored an old red MB5, upon which I sent him a photo of a 10-year old me, next to my older brother on his aforementioned MB5, regaling him with a short story of how his project sparked memories of me learning to ride and my introduction to motorcycles and a brief history and and and… He has since mailed me back, to say I should look out for the August issue, as my story would appear in the Letters section… we shall see…

  • When did you buy your first KLR?
  • bought my '84 model about ten years ago... R9500.00!

  • How many KLRs have you owned since?

Never had a bike when at school, too dangerous according to my parents
Had a lot of bikes through the years
Learned to ride on a Lambretta 250 scooter that my Father had when I was in std 6, great fun
Then when I started to work and earn my own money
    Honda 350-four

    Then bought a Honda CB650 Custom for a bargain, R 600.00 1984

Had a Montessa scrambler with a 450 cc engine, no photos ever taken, dangerous machine

Traded the 650 custom at Bobby Scott Yamaha Pretoria for the IT200

Again traded at Bobby Scott for the XT 550

Then had the Yamaha XJ750 ones with yellow spotlight, also never a photo taken

After 18 years not riding it was time for the first KLR in 2007

Then the BMW 650 twin, this was a mistake, too small, went on the Buff with the BOSS

    Then got the R1200GS

    A Harley 883 Sportster

At that stage had the BMW, again a Blue KLR, secondhand bought and the Harley

Then the daughter went to Skelmbos, sold all three bikes in one week, but before the end of that week had the first XT660Z

    Then again the Black KLR

And the now bike, again XT660Z Tenere

I think it's in the blood

My Father on his 10-12 Harley, I think 1955

I've only had one wife for the last 29 years though  -
I think I had the most fun and explored the most on the R1200GS, it was quite a bike to have had
Maybe, one day, it might be a BMW again :woohoo:
And when I'm old, a Harley again, the Harley was fun too :P
