Top end - cams was created by Bakgat
Hi Guys,
I am new to Forum. See my post "Nuwe lid" in new members.
I would like to get your thoughts on this. I can get this KLR Gen1 from a friend for R5000. It was running low on oil and I believe that the cams need to be replaced according to him. It is standing now for 3 years. I do not have the knowledge to work on engines and I would rather leave it for an expert. The rest of the bike is okay. It needs TLC and a new speedo/odometer as the current plastic casing is broken. It can be a nice project to get the bike fixed, but as I have mentioned, when it comes to open an engine, I would not do it myself.
What would be plus-minus the cost to replace the cams and who can do it? I am in Secunda, Mpumalanga.
What other must-do's are there? I was reading about the "DooHickey" What will be the cost to do that?
Maybe I must just sell it for spares and buy one in a better condition?
I will appreciate your input on this.
Sorry if the english was not good - Ek is eintlik Afrikaans en vir iemand met my ID boek nommer wat van die Vrystaat kom sukkel n ou maar bietjie.
Groete.

Damage could be massive. A second hand head will cost you upwards of R12K and they are in big demand as what has happened to that bike happens a lot, as KLR's use a bit of oil. If Chain and sprockets brakes and Tyres are Ok I would start at R10k for the bike, as you could be in for an expensive repair

Hi,
if the cams need to be replaced the cylinder head will also need to be replaced as when the motor runs low on oil the cam seizes in the cylinder head.
This severely damages the bearing surface that the cams run in.
The last going price on a good S/H cylinder head with cams was R. 12k.
Then it would be foolish not to rebore the cylinder and fit an oversize piston to reduce the oil consumption.
So with all the parts needed, labour, you will be over R. 20k very quickly.
KLR's are great bikes, reliable, and good all rounder's.

Robbie Lawson can fix the head for you, Cahrged me R3000, Which in my humble opinion makes it a better design, as cams will be running on oil bronz. But i must add mine only needed the exhaust cams to be done. 0845893532. He is in Scottburgh. If you do both cams it might R6k, which is still better than 12k, then you have another 6k to spend on what else. Maybe ket someone have a look, maby it is not so bad, then decide

Remember to address the reason for running low on oil, as capeKLR suggested. Otherwise you run the risk of damaging the cams again.
