Not sure what caused it, he has seen other similar problems. Bearings seem still fine.

It is not the timing chain, it is one of the sprockets on the balancer chain (that is if I understand it correctly). The balancer was not rotating in order to balance the vibrations from the piston and crank. Hope I understood it correctly!!

I am not sure what caused the failure. The tension on the doo was only adjusted once or twice in more than 20 000km.
