Hi CapeKlr searching the internet I discovered that my KLR has 2 intake cams as they are identical. Reason I say this there is no decompression mechanism on any of the cams and the timing arrows point towards each other. In my panic/haste/whatever I took the cams out and installed them as per the manual with the arrows point to the front of the bike. the result is the intake cams lobes point to the back of the bike and the "exhaust" cam also points to the back instead of the front.
As my bike have done 15000 kms with the cams I can only assume that they were facing correctly meaning the exhaust cam lobes was facing to the front of the bike and the arrows on the cam gear facing towards each other.

What I would like to know is: Are the cams the same meaning it would not matter if I used the cams as described in the previous sentence, or do they differ? How important is it to have the decompression mechanism?

My KLR has never been great performer even after the engine upgrade and experimenting with different sprockets combos (16,42 at the moment) The best speed I could get out of it was about 120 and only after a long time, should I hit the slightest uphill/turn or side wind the speed could drop down to 80.

Bump - I do not want to scare anybody but there is some good reading and advice in this thread. I have a funny clunking sound every now and again when I start the bike. Spoke with Groenie and a visit to him is being planned.

Sarel do that soon it could save you a fortune.

The end to my story: there was bent valves, a damaged cam and cam caps. Now I have the 4 new valves, head rebuild and the correct cams in. Lets not talk about the cost.... The bike was never this good in the 3 years as it is now. I now have the power to hold my speed up most inclines. It also can get up to 130 fairly easy even saw 150 once but mostly I am ok with it at 110.

So I visited Groenie on Saturday and all seems honky dory, thanks Gix. It seems I have an over active imagination, but at least we replaced a gasket that was leaking anyway!!

I was then so happy that I gave it it's 45 000 km service ( in 2.5 years!!) and replaced the coolant.
