And it happens again 35 000km later. On the morning of our return from Tonteldoos I commented that she did not sound too lekker. Checked oil and all was well.
Opened up at Groenie on Saturday and balancer chain very loose, so loosened doo bolt to take up the slack. Put case back on and started bike. Sounded even worse. Opened again and chain again loose. Then we started disassembling and looking in earnest. the same top balance bearing was shot. luckily this time all balls still in the bearing cage.

The most interesting thing is this single ball the same size as the shot bearing. Cannot find wher it came from.

Is it possible that you have missed this one ball from the previous incident, or did you carefully count the balls last time?

Perhaps you just had a Friday afternoon bike - some washer or snap-ring left out somewhere causing additional vibrating load on the bearing?

Ai Dave, never good to see these problems! Strongs!

I try to avoid reading this thread, too scared it will happen to my bike also.

Good luck with the repairs.

We came up with the same conclusion. that casing is always left hanging on the bike e when you remove the engine. Was stuck firmly to the CDI pickup, so dont think it played any part in the this new bearing collapse

How to get those bearings out? Heat the casings in the oven, off course. BUT I did it once before and the cow was rather pissed about the whole house stinking of hot oil.....

First you wash the casings with a paraffin gun to remove all dirt and oil. Then you wash them with Prepsol and rinse under the tap. We're replacing everything, so getting water in the bearings doesn't matter. Let them dry, while real dinner is in the oven.

Then, as soon as dinner is done, put them in at about 100 deg for 45 minutes.

Then the bearings will almost drop out by themselves with just a little tap.

I like this pic. A gearbox in a tray.

Maybe found the issue. This has happened around 35000 each time. Fitted all new Bearings On Saturday. Crank Case in the oven and bearings in the freezer. All just dropped in, except top outer balancer weight bearing, the one that keeps collapsing. had to give it a couple of taps and once all cooled down bearing sounds rough. Suspect this is the issue. Gonna have that hole checked to see if in tolerance.
