Ouch, that does not look good.
Check the valve clearances, intake valve will have little
to no clearance now.

What air filter have you got in your bike?

A very good one in fact (UNI), but that is of little comfort when the plug for the airbox vent on the clean side of the filter has gone AWOL and the bike has just come back from a, obviously very dusty, Northern Namibia trip.

You are 100% correct on the intake valve clearances - they were fully closed. Exhaust valve clearances were in spec.

The main concern, however, was the condition of the cams and caps as that would determine if this was a basket case or a rebuild.

It was nervous times..................................

Cam looked good

Caps were not gouged or showing signs of cam cavitation

Journals also not bad

Did I doge a bullet here - what do you guys think?

Looks like the sand dulled the cap and journal surfaces a bit, but that it did not do any real damage.

There is also no movement in the cams when torqued down.

Inlet side of the head nice and clean - sand blasted it seems.

The outlet side was a different story

Probably also have to do it sometime. Also had almost the same scare. Was on the trip to northwest, marakweng crator. Both of u worked exstremely hard, in the sand. At same stage when i had some time, i checked the oil, in upright position. Nothing in the glass. She was running warm anyway due to the hard work, and clueless rider. My hart almost came to a standstill. I would hate myself if something happened to her due to my incompitance. Filled up with oil. And she just kept on going, till we got home, where she was immediately booked into sickbay for a check up. In all of that she still withstood all, and is ok. God tough me a valueble lesson that day

She even insisted we go for a naked ride after that, just for the fun

She is truely awesome
