ANOTHER Doohicky Question was created by GMDaynes
Hello Clan

I have bought my first KLR 6 months ago (2008 KLR), and really enjoying it (even came with a KLR clan sticker :)). Been reading a few forums and thought i would reach out to the Clan and see their view.

Question 1: The Doohicky.
My bike is nearing 50 000 kms on the clock and I am not sure if the doohicky has been completed yet (asked the previous owner and he did not know, bike has had 3 owners). The bike is running great and I dont hear any issues, but im tempted to open her up and see if the "operation" has been completed, however just doing this is quite an expensive process as need to buy the tools for the fly wheel and new gaskets. Is it worth me going through this process if my bike is at 50 000kms with no issues (mybe the first owner did it).

Question 2: Is the SA Model Limited
I was reading on the US forums that the US version has been limited. I was wondering is the SA version has? A bit scared to take out the carb and start playing with it at this stage so this question is more out of curiosity than anything else.

All the Best
Greg

Hi Greg, as far as I know it is possible to ly the bike on its side and open the stator cover to see if the doohicky is in good condition. This way the only expense would be the gasket replacement.
You will then be able to see if its been done before having to fork out the cash for all the tools and replacement parts.

Welcome to the forum.

Opening up is the only sure way to see if the doo was done. The method suggested by Denton is a possible way to open the side cover. Alternatively you can drain the oil and change the filter and know for sure that the oil and filter is good for the next 5000km. From which area are you? Maybe somebody on the here can borrow you the tools.

I had my 2010 bike's done on 28k km and the spring was broken.

Many safe miles.

Edit: post a picture of your bike. Maybe somebody recognize it and give you more info on the history of the bike.

Thanks Abre

Im in Claremont in Cape Town. Have added a couple of pics, can see the old KLR Clan sticker there

Also while on this topic, if i open up was thinking of cutting my own gaskets. Does anyone know where I can purchase gasket sheets in CT? and any recommendations on what sheets to purchase.

All the best

Capeklr will perhaps recognise the bike. He will be able to advise you on the gaskets. He is the go-to person KLR's in Cape Town.

Pannas will be able to add you to the Cape Town whatsapp group if you are interested.

Hi,
currently I don't have any doohickeys in stock.
Ordered and paid for ten kits more than a month ago, but with the current situation
all over the world this parcel is still in the States. :S
When it gets here with the backlog at customs it will still take quite some time before I can
receive the parcel.
So I don't know when I will have these, nor can I give a indication on costs yet. :(
I do highly recommend to check if it has been done or not.
I have seen expensive damage done due to the doohickey issue not having been addressed.
Also your bike being a 2008 will have the deep hole syndrome which should also be rectified.
For this I do still have parts.
I do not recommend laying the bike on the right hand side to do this job as it is to easy to drop
a small part into the gearbox. Especially if you are doing this for the first time.
Gasket material is available at places like Midas, get the thin one.
