Hi All
I have a 2012 KLR, 62 000km, in the KZN Midlands. Unfortunately the upper balance shaft bearings are shot. There is about 4-6mm of play there. My understanding is that the engine will need to be stripped to sort this out, which will most likely open Pandora's box...

I'm open to some suggestions and some advice please.

Options seem to be 1) get a new engine or 2) strip bike and sell for parts.

Thoughts?

Hi James,
yes the engine has to be stripped completely to replace those bearings.
The left bearing is an agents only part and needs to be pressed into the casing from behind, hence
the need to strip the engine.
With a second hand engine you will never know when that will fail.

Or what else might be in the new pandora's box  . Think about it open her up, or let someone open her up, total redo, total piece of mind, that is my thinking. Might cost you around R6000 at most. Worst case scenario, and anyone welcome to correct me if I am wrong. Another enjin R15000, with unkwon surprises thrown in just for the fun of it, again correct me if I am wrong

I have done mine twice now with help from Groenie changed ALL bearings and seals which you might as well do if you are strippingthat far. For around R1500 plus labour if that is all that is wrong. You can machine a 2 standard bearings rather than buying kawa part. Still need to buy all gaskets. Estimate around R6000 if that is all that is wrong.
Second time round top bearing had turned in the case so needed some machining.
Now i have a spare bottom end just in case but no issues so far 30K KM.

Thanks for the advice guys!
I've managed to sell the bike, as is, for a decent price.

I'm back in the market
